Sailing excitement all around the ILYA
Pat Dunsworth is ready. How about you? The spring events are in the record books and homelake racing began for many of you this Memorial Day weekend. The photo above shows exciting action at the Lake Harriet Tuneup. All fleets enjoyed successful events this spring. I20s traveled to Indian Lake, Ohio. The MCs traveled aroung the circuit gathering points for a spring champion. The C's always enjoy Dallas and Springfield with other "younger" events added to the circuit. 42 (count them!) E's traveled to Geneva for the inaugural year of the asymmetrical E in its new phase of development. The Melges 17 boats also gathered at Geneva to experience the pros crewing for the skippers - a rule in this class. X boats abound throughout the Inland. Growth is phenomenal in the SE WI region. A One Design racing is exciting with boats sold and a new boat on the water. New owners take over this year and Fletcher Driscoll has a Dumbledore now. He is always adding to his Potter sequels. The Opti, Laser and 420 crowd never stops racing. Collegiate Nationals are this week and as the editor writes this from Newport, she is enjoying our ILYA sailors from a magnificent venue. Get ready, here we come for another exciting sailing summer in scows.

The ILYA Laser and 420 Champs are the last weekend of June. With fireworks, State St. restaurants, Union Terrace viewing for the parents, how can you go wrong? The University of Wisconsin Sailing Team and the Hoofers Sailing Club will be hosting the ILYA Youth Champs in Madison, WI the weekend of June 28-29, 2008. This is the same site as last year, with so much of the same great fun: - Fantastic competition of all ages from all across the Midwest (25 and under) - Rhythm and Booms Festival all around Madison - Three meals, including Friday evening social with the entire sailing club - Great ILYA Race Committee - Still only $30 for each sailor But we've also added some new perks to make it more fun and easier to navigate in Madison. - To ease space concerns at Hoofers, we'll be launching all Lasers from the Porter Boathouse (home to UW Rowing). - We're offering dorm housing for just $15/night in UW's Lakeshore Dorms with only a 1 min walk from the Laser launching site and only 10 min walk form Hoofers (Regatta HQ) - There will be volunteers at the Regatta HQ to help parents and solo sailors with loading and unloading with valet parking in FREE lots for those who need it. All regatta information can be found at the UW Sailing Team's website at www.uwsailingteam.org. There is extensive sailing, housing, and regatta information and an awesome map to help you navigate around Madison.

ILYA SAILORS IN ALL THREE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Picturesque Newport is abuzz with college sailors gracing Naragansett Bay area. The collegians are sailing adjacent to downtown Newport while spectators are positioned at historic Ft. Adams. The women began their quest on Monday and conclude today. Coeds and Team Racing follow for a ten-day event. For more information, go to collegesailing.org and look for the ILYA names of our talented sailors. You will see our sailors listed on the rosters of Wisconsin (qualified for all three), Eckert (Women's) and Hobart/Wm Smith (one of our sailors in co-eds). The photos of the first day are exciting. Go to the site and look for your sailors by school.

| EDITOR'S PERSONAL NOTE |
|
THANK YOU
It is not often I use this forum to editorialize but this past month has brought much support for the ILYA. In addition, I know how privileged I am to have this sport and you to support our small world of sailing.
I received a most touching momento this past month from George Eddy, an old E boater from Lake Geneva days of "Jimmie Smith" and Ernst Schmidt. George has authored a book recounting his sailing days from novice to cruiser, mainly in his role as publisher of the now Sailing World. What an enjoyable read (available at Amazon.com with proceeds to the Olympic foundation at US Sailing) but what struck me is his numerous mentions of his origins with us.
The opportunity to return again with my children to a collegiate nationals provides a look back at what sailing has done for all of us. The venue at Newport is always impressive but to visit with old friends, to experience the excitement of our nation's youth, to watch in particular the UW team mature after years of team building has been memorable.
Lastly, for Mother's Day I received a gift from one of my daughers - a quilt with the ILYA burgee and the logo of each of our classes. On several levels this is a magnificent present. It reminds me of the effort it takes to be a part of this strong organization, it demonstrates the impact sailing has on the lives of my children and, above all, how blessed our family is to experience all this but, as an aside, the display of all our classes together on that quilt reminds me of the special bond we share across class lines. That is unique to our corner of this sport.
Enjoy the summer and enjoy our many classes of this century-old association with generations yet to experience our world of scow sailing.
